Annual Old Guard Luncheopn 2024
Our concluding event of the Old Guard annual season for 2023-2024 witnessed a capacity gathering of some 120 members and guests gathered at this venerable and refurbished first rate country club featuring delicious entrees consisting of salmon, chicken marsala and eggplant parmesan, followed by cheesecake and tiramisu. Our guest speaker, introduced by Paul Dean, was none other than our very own Dr. William A. MacDonnell, DDS, speaking on the topic of Horace Wells, Connecticut’s Greatest Humanitarian, and a seminal figure in pioneering the use of anesthesia in medicine. An informative and heartfelt presentation by Dr. MacDonnell, enjoyed and appreciated by all present.

The Old Guard Inc. of West Hartford proudly presented the Kilwins Swing for the Kids Golf Tournament on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at Stanley Golf Course and The Back Nine Tavern in New Britain. Forty-four golfers and fourteen lunch attendees enjoyed a beautiful day for a great cause. After nine holes of golf, all gathered at the restaurant for a delicious buffet dinner. Both Stanley Golf and Back Nine Tavern do an outstanding job for the tournament.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, raffle items valued at over $1,800 were given to winners. A silent auction raised $1,800 for the tournament. Additionally, money was raised by the sale of golf mulligans ($270) and raffle ticket sales ($635).
In total, the Kilwins Swing for the Kids Golf Tournament raised $9,613! All these funds go to the YMCA Camp Scholarship Fund which enables kids from families with financial need to attend Y camps.
A huge thanks goes to the sponsors who made this tournament a success. The support of these organizations is greatly appreciated. Please support our sponsors with your business.

The Old Guard will have a docent led tour of The Bushnell on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at 1 p.m. The tour will include a backstage (and on stage) look at both the main Mortensen Hall and the Belding Theater, among many highlights. It is free, as is the parking, which is in the parking lot of the State Office Building across the street at 165 Capitol Avenue. It lasts approximately 90 minutes.
Our host, Frank Virnelli, Jr., is a volunteer at the Bushnell. Join this tour to see and witness just how the magic occurs during performances. This tour will be an “eye-opener” for all.

Guys having fun while doing good.
On behalf of the Salvation Army I am sending out this link that will allow you to donate to the virtual Red Kettle online.
This is a safe and secure way to make a donation to the Salvation Army, specifically the Hartford branch that as an organization we have supported for several years.
Last year, between direct contributions and the Virtual Red Kettle, the Old Guard raised $8,000. After visiting with their leadership and seeing and hearing the good they do for our community, I know that every dollar is appreciated and needed. I know it is a big ask to meet or to exceed last year’s total, but I challenge you to share this link with friends and family.
All donations through this link will be credited to the Old Guard’s totals. This is grassroots fundraising and it is you who are planting those seeds for a successful campaign. Below is the link for donating. I am also attaching a couple of slides to guide you through the process if you are unfamiliar with online donations.
As with previous years, If you prefer to donate directly with a check, I am happy to accept those and submit them to the Salvation Army office directly. Thank you in advance for your generosity and your service to the community.
